Training Services
Many Community Safety practitioners and others have already established that there needs to be an improvement of skills within Community Safety Partnerships. This is linked to the general need of development that all professionals need. One answer to this is training and as a result NCSN has put in place the first stages of a training programme for practitioners and others. The initial courses are based around those areas that are central to all those who work in Community Safety but these alone do not cover all needs. Additional stages will be put in place after consultation with members.
As the work area of Community Safety has become more complex so have the skills that are needed. In addition to Community Safety skills and knowledge a Partnership also has to deal with the running of projects, the evaluation of those projects, the funding of those projects and the linkage of those projects with other work areas as part of the Local Area Agreement process.
Often a Partnership does not have all the necessary skills and knowledge development might be needed but who needs what training? One way of deciding on this is by way of a skills/training analyse. For example most people in a Partnership will benefit from the NCSN Introduction Course but not all will need to progress to the NCSN Foundation Course. Some members of the Partnership will require specific training around a skill such as Project Management, others may need to improve their knowledge of an offence area such as Domestic Violence. All partners need to be able to problem solve a Crime or Disorder issue and to have the understanding of how to construct a simple action plan but not all will need to be able to combine those plans into a programme.
Different Partnerships have different needs and resources but all should follow a simple process:
- Establish what skills and knowledge is needed in the Partnership
- Establish what skills and knowledge already exists within Partner organisations
- Identify the gaps
- Identify people in the Partnership who can be trained to fill those gaps
- Identify were that training can be obtained.
NCSN can assist in the latter, either from the NCSN programme or from members training organisations, universities or colleges.
